What is up everybody? Everybody, welcome to the Ham Radio Crash Course. Welcome to Saturday. Today, a patron picks episode and they want to talk about some more advanced features of that new Kenwood D750 mobile radio, and I'm happy to oblige. So, we'll be taking a look at some of my most favorite advanced features on this brand new radio. Please enjoy the memes, and we'll get started real soon. Hey everybody, how's it going? I hope you're doing great. Welcome to the Hammer Crash Course. Uh, I am living through the heat wave. I don't even know like this is the hottest it's been around this area for quite some time. I am I am broiling. Hopefully, we're all good. But aoy, we have an AOY in the chat. Um, I was jokingly sending out group messages earlier today. Um, people just be leaving their stuff on default. You can blast everybody on APRS uh using a tip that I will be showing you here very shortly. Do want to give a shout out to uh some of our friends here. We got a bit of a fun launch that's going to happen in about 30 minutes or so. We 4DX will be launching Abun. And so we will be uh following the balloon's traffic as it launches out there and hopefully we'll see something fun. But yeah, we're going to we're going to keep an eye on what's going there. But if you want to follow it, the link is in the live stream chat. So make sure to check that out. Also, uh the manuals, right guys? Manuals are an important thing for radios. In this case, I was using both the 75 and the D750 manuals. Links are in the video description for that. if you are so inclined and looking for this radio, check out DXE Engineering. Uh I do have an affiliate code there. So, appreciate you. Also, a bit of a spoiler alert. I dropped a couple of links for those of you with the D750 that are worried about that clicking noise. I got a solution. Those are the two items. I will explain more in a video that will likely be going up on Monday or Tuesday or Thursday. So, there you go. Very good. How's it going everybody? Hope you're doing well. Hopefully, you're having fun, staying cool. Hopefully some of you are experiencing fall. I am not. I'm very unhappy about all of that. Very uncool. Yeah, I'm looking at the chat there. Good. Good. Yes. Okay. Very good. All right. So, what are we talking about? Well, we're talking about the D750, right? Mobile radio triband, right? Triband. But a lot of the features that we're going to be covering today, not really for 220. I'll show you a table of uh contents of what we will be covering today in the advanced in the advanced chat. APRS groups digipeting crossband repeat wireless LAN DAR direct mode wireless op mode and then the voice guidance system. A bit of a shout out for our uh differently aabled individuals. I know that I get a number of people that talk about accessibility of amateur radios, how good they are for people who are maybe difficultly sighted or have trouble hearing uh a number of things. And so this is it's nice to be able to hit uh hit this and Kenwood actually does a really good job at that. So that's part of the reason that uh we will be doing it. Okay, questions before we get started. Yes, I will be taking questions. So follow along in the chat if you are so inclined. We will be doing an after chat. It will be over on my Discord. The Discord is linked in the video description. >> Yeah, chat >> go. >> Okay. >> Oh, and by the way, Dad, >> yeah, >> fish. >> Thank you. Thank you for fish. Great. I'm gonna take a sip of my drink. Okay. questions. I'll take them in uh the the chat. I don't 93 in uh Vegas is insane. It is over 100 degrees and that is way too hot out here. So, all right, cool. Okay, let's >> dying. >> We're all dying, Ben. It's You're very off mic, so you're just yelling at nothing. So, okay, let's take a look at what we got going on here. All right, so the first one, uh, we're actually going to try this in two parts, and I'm curious how this is going to go. So, I I mentioned that I wasn't the biggest fan of the keypad on this radio. I found that text entry particularly for APRS is yeah it's a bit it's a bit frustrating to be honest with you. But the way you do it it's it's very straightforward is you just go to messages if you want to and you can hit new um or you can reply to somebody. In fact I have a number of messages to reply to for like the relay program whatever. But if you go to menu and then APRS and you go to 5 95. Oh, not bulletin board. That's a different advanced feature, message groups. So, these are standard message groups right out of the gate that your radios likely have configured if you're running APRS, which is kind of funny because um yeah, you could just type all and you'll just blast everybody. So, speaking of which, let's let's do that right now. So, I'm going to go back out here. Um we're going to go back into our duel. And where did we go? How the heck did I do that? I think I hit the uh the program config or pre uh program. You can load up a lot of different stuff. Wait, what? How did I get I have never turned off duel. Uh, what? Where is my That's wild. Okay. Anyway, we got it in the B channel. All we really need to do is show the the one at a time. But anyway, so if we go to key uh message and hit new. So, let's just fire it off to all. Let's see what happens. Hello. Well, now let's change that. We're going to add some more. Hello. Don't melt. This is why I don't like doing T9 anymore. Now we can send it. Okay, got it. Here we go. this radio. So, we'll wait a second to see if we get somebody back here. Oh, wait. We may have to resend that. We had it in uh KISS mode, which it probably didn't go through as an APRS message. So, no problem. We'll redo. We'll just send aoy. We'll really just blow up the uh inbox of everybody and then I will hear something. There we go. I've never actually had that go off like that before. That's interesting. Anyway, we're going to need it for a little bit for the crossband repeat, but okay. So, that's the first thing. You may want to change your groups or you're going to have people like me that can just send a hoy uh to everyone. Now, curiously, why it was on uh KISS was we can flip this around, too. So, we have our application running. We should be What? Get out of here. I don't want Gemini. We should be good here. We should be pulling in some packets. So, we'll go to messages, send to all, and we can say anything. Thanks. If you're watching the live stream, so there you go. So that's one thing you can do right out of the gate. Uh you don't need Uh, wait. Is it doing vertical screen? Is the stream vertical right now, guys? Okay. Okay. Thank you. God, you guys freak freak me out. I got to ignore the chat apparently. I try to listen to you guys, but you make me freak out. Okay, so that's the that's the first one. Next one. Digipeter. So, something that I like to leave on uh let me put it back into APRS 12 mode. Needs to be in APRS 12. Go to 580. So, we talked about this in the past, but all the menu systems are broken up in these numbered systems. So it starts out at 1, two, three, four, five, and then go to eight. Did you repeat? And then under my call on, you you have that turned on. You want to leave the UI check alone. You uh dig alias. You don't need that. But let me go back there. Okay. So now with this connected, if I try and beacon, which I should be able to do with this guy, let's go back to APRS and we will enable APRS Kiss. So that's me and it just transmitted. So that was my beaconing here getting re-transmitted by the mobile. Oh, well that's good. I appreciate that, Bill. Thanks. Good. Excellent. Two streams are working. Cool. So, you can watch whatever you want. If you want horizontal, you want vertical, whatever you need. Whatever you want. Okay. Cool. So, we just got slammed with a bunch of uh messages, but there you go. Okay. So, that's the uh digipeding. Digipeding is handy. Digiping is handy when you are going to hike around somewhere with a handheld. It looks for your call sign and that's what it uh go sends out for those you know that may be interested in following along and you need the more power to get your transmit out. That is how I have it configured is that it's retransmitting my call sign is uh again if you go back here menu APRS digipete and then on the zero spot digipete my call is on. So that's the digipeter function being on. Uh so right now I'll turn it back off. We don't need that for right now. But okay so next this one this this is pretty fun. So this is the crossband repeater function on this radio. So, how you do this, let me get off of APRS because this is going to absolutely There we go. So, we're going to use 145 and let's see 145, wrong one. So, I'm going to set the radio to 145.030 and then 446.150. And I'll take it out of any uh TNC mode. So that's your VHS and this is your uh your V your UHF. So setting this up is is pretty straightforward. Back in menu, go to one item one for repeater and then three repeater mode. Make sure crossband is set if you want to do crossband. If you want to just do lock transmit on A and B, that's fine. Um, but crossband is going to allow for biirectional communication. Okay. Uh, wait, I went too far. Never escape. Always back. Never escape. Always back. The repeater ID I have for my call sign. Uh, I have it set to Morse radio for the ID. Auto offset's fine. I I let everything else pretty much be standard at that point, but Okay, cool. So now we got to put this into digipeding mode. And it actually does require a power cycle. So you hold down the power button and then this guy right here, the lower left button. Hold it down. I don't think it'll do crossbanding VHF packet. We could try that at the end of the video though. And then hold this button to hold the power button down. Now don't let go until you hear the beep. You hold both until you hear the beep. Beep. Okay. So, you'll see it's locked out. Lock. I can't do anything, right? But now, so this radio is going to be on and it's birectional. Kilo India 6 November Alpha Zulu. Kilo India 6 November Alpha Zulu. Test test test on 2 m 70 cm cross. >> So the receive is green and it's transmitting on the lower channel. Uh question in the chat. Are you able to remotely control the radio when it's in crossband repeater mode? In this particular mode, James, no. But hold on because we are going to show you wireless op mode using the D75. And that is the capability of modifying and changing the radio settings. That is how you do that. So this is in full duplex mode or sorry uh crossband repeat mode. It already is full duplex on its own, but birectional. Does that make sense what I'm doing? So, I'm going to key up here and I'm going to key up here. See? You see? Full duplex or crossband. Sorry. Okay. Now, to turn this off, pretty simple. Hold down the power, turn it off. Come back down here. Hold down the button again. Hold the power. Wait for the beep. And then we should be back. So if we go MR, that's the adventure frequency. Back to APRS. So there you go. That is uh how you set that. Cool. All right. So that was crossband repeat. Okay. Now wireless LAN DAR is kind of an interesting one. This is like if you want to forgo having any hotspot whatsoever and you just want to do Darry things um on your radio after getting the wireless LAN set up. I will skip a bit on this and assume that you do have the wireless LAN connectivity. Assumption is that you will be on the Wi-Fi, right? So, make sure you do that. Then you're going to go to six five for DV gateway and then DV gateway mode. You're going to turn it into direct mode. For call sign, you want to have your call sign and then a sub ID. So in my case is A and then the radio that I'm connected on is the D750. Right now I don't believe you need the D750 but you do need that A or a B. You cannot use a G or a couple other letters which I can show you a little bit on the instructions because there is some instructions to this. So the manual will be helpful here. So do keep that in mind. So let me go back. All right. 6061. We did that. Now we're going to go up to 64. Oh, not 64. 664. Direct mode. I have zero set to my call sign. Um, in 664, we are auto updating on reflector hosts. And 662, I'm using the type global. You're basically going to be in global unless you're in Japan. Japan has a type. And then everything else is global. And we'll go back. DV gateway. We already did 650, so we're in direct mode now. So now, while I've got control for while I've got control for the VFO lower here, and I can still do APRS. I'll show you that on the B channel. Still works completely. Um, let's go back out of that. But now I have this upper direct reflector. So, this is bypassing the radio and I can connect to a number of basically repeaters that have internet connection now. So, if I go to key and I change this to two. So, this is the one for the DAR capabilities. I'm going to click two. Hold it down and I'm gonna say gateway CQ. I could go North America, US West, California, and then I can go down the list here. Uh Cyprus is right down the street from me. But I'm not tied to RF distances now. I'm only tied to uh the actual internet connection of those repeaters in the area. But I don't need to do that right now. I already have one configured. Um, I'm going to back out until we get to reflector. So, I'm going to link to reflector. We're going to use 14 Charlie. And I'm going to try and key it. And it's it's probably not going to work. So, just hang tight. So, it pted there. Transmit. Did I say use reflector or link reflector? Link reflector. Yeah. Okay. Let's try it again. Okay, I probably do need to give it a gateway. I had mine hard cast to the gateway that I created my DAR account on, but we'll just do another one real fast. So, we'll go to uh Lagouna Beach, K6 SOA. Uh let's do a quick quick go. And then we will lock in the reflector. There we go. So, not linked. It'll go away in a second. Okay. So, let's try that again. Use reflector now. And now we are linked. So yeah, I'm probably going to have to crack a beer when I get done with this show for sure. So let's do a check and see if anybody can copy me. This is Kilo India 6 November Alpha Zulu. I'm testing out the my reflector connection to 14 Charlie. Is there anyone monitoring? Monitoring? Are you monitoring? What's going on? This is KI6NZ. Anyone copying on 14 Charlie? I don't think there's anybody monitoring 14 Charlie. So I'm basically for >> one second to respond real quick. 14 Charlie >> does somebody have a question about 14 Charlie? >> Negative question on 14 Charlie. This is KI6NAZ. I am using a direct connect uh via the new Kenwood D750 and I just wanted to see if I was making it. Thank you for coming back to me. Okay. Oh, that audio is a bit rough. Okay. Well, we heard it. Mission accomplished as far as I'm concerned. Okay. Now, let's take this out of reflector mode. I'm going to unlink from all this by going back. Oo, that's too loud. Menu, Dar, DV gateway off, and then escape. And so, we're right back to analog. Just like that. Just like that. So, working. That was uh wireless LAN connectivity. You just have to go through a gateway. Um, and the gateway are basically the reflectors, right? or sorry the the repeaters. Okay, wireless op mode. Uh this is a little weirdish one and I want to take a minute and talk kind of what is going on here. So once upon a time uh Kenwoods, the TS2000, right? Is it TS2000? I believe so. The Kenwood D74 had something called uh Sky Command. It was a great little system, Sky Command. And it would basically, I believe, working over DTMF tones allowed the individual to control the different features and um settings on the radio. I think it worked with the D710 as well. Uh it was a pretty cool feature. So, they didn't really it's gone now, but it it still exists in the form of this wireless op mode thing, right? So, let me show you what has to be done for wireless op mode. So, you go into menu and we go to configuration. So, 90 and we go to this one's off the top of my head. I can't remember exactly. Not that one. I may have to look this up. Um, a other I think it's other. No, interface. Nope. Okay, then it's auxiliary. Yes, this is it. Okay. So, uh, an auxiliary, so 94, and you scroll down to secret access code. Set a secret access code and do the same on your Kenwood handheld ham radio. And then you can enter into this remote operation mode. So to do that, we're going to have to shut it off again, but this time we're going to hold down this second button. Remember, they don't call this sky command anymore. This is wireless op mode. So I'm going to hold down this button and I'm going to hold down the power button and we are going to get it to turn on. Wait for the beep. external remote. So 146580 is not the frequency I should be on for this, but um oh well, we're kind of pot committed. So anyway, one 46 580. Okay. So, let's turn off. All right. We've got everything turned off here. And I am going to key this radio on the same frequency. And I'm going to hit enter. And then I'm going to cycle through some of these DTMF settings. So, let's do frequency. Enter. 1 4 5 1 5 0 0 did not work. Let's change that to repeater on. test ki68. No. So, oh no, wait. Well, that's the way it's supposed to work. I just started this one today and I I have not spent much time with it. But to show you again the options here, I'll I'll work through them for you. So if you hold down and these are the options you have I really want to do this one though. We got to figure this out. Okay, so we're going to hit enter again. 1 4 0. No. Uh, it should just be 14 51 5 0 0. Right. We wanted to see this move, but it didn't. Okay. Well, we tried. This came bundled like, you know, this came working like standard. This is the standard base uh firmware load on this. So, It's hot today. Sorry. Okay, we're going to do uh a couple more things here and then I think we're going to play around a little bit with some random connections as I drop a radio. Oh, there it is. Okay. So, to get out of this one, same deal. You got to hold down the power button. And now hold down the second button. Hold down the power button. Wait for the beep. Great. So, we'll go down here. APRS. We will set this to actually let's just leave APRS off for right now because we're going to go to do some uh the frequency guidance and voice guidance systems. So back to menu nine two accessibility and then two. So you've got manual auto one auto 2. So let's go auto one and see what it does. Now I see voice is listed there and I'm clicking and it's not giving me anything. So we have voice guidance volume, voice guidance speed, call out readout standard. Beep, voice guidance. Okay. All right. >> Memory. >> Oh, great. Okay, here we go. VFO FM 446.35 >> I'm sorry I wasn't prepared for that voice. Oh my >> A memory zero. >> What happens if we put it into APRS mode? So we'll go back. V VFO FM 446.5 memory APRS APRS APRS on Let's see what it does. Oh, no reading the beacons. Let's try auto 2 zero >> menu 9 2 9 22 2 voice guidance auto one auto 2 9 22 2 voice guidance 9 speed 924 voice guidance speed 9 kiss on mode off APRS on a APRS A1 Saturday, mostly cloudy in the morning, then partly cloudy. >> APM 0 A call. >> That's not bad. That's not bad at all. That's pretty good. Uh yeah, we did an intro to this radio, but um on the patron picks this week or this month, all the patrons voted for another look at the Kenwood for the some of the advanced features. We did not cover a lot of that stuff that I covered today, like digiping or crossband repeat or APRS groups or any of that stuff. So this is kind of a a first for for some of that. never really ran um digiping or uh crossband repeat very often. Uh I think people they they dropped Sky Command because there just wasn't that many people that were that interested in it. I I honestly think that's really what it was. So, let's um let's see. There's something I wanted to do. Uh, so a lot of this doesn't work on 220, Jason. None of it works on 220. Um, in fact, it doesn't crossband on 220. It's not full duplex on 220. I think you might be able to do APRS. Um, what's the APRS 220 frequency? Let's see if we can get picked up there. I'm looking it up now, but I'm not finding it. Is there not a APRS frequency for 1.25 meters? Let's try it out. I guess it doesn't matter. I can just type in whatever I want. Uh 223 is fine. Let's just We're going to do a demo. So, we're going to go down here. VFO >> VFO FM. >> Enter. Enter 3 22 23 MHz >> megahertz. I heard me >> TX beacon. >> Yeah, it just beaconed on 223. So yeah, >> Kiss ARS memory a. >> Okay, now I have to turn this off. Okay, next couple of notes, important notes for how you use this radio, whether it's over Bluetooth or over USB. You want to go out of here, back to menu, at the gear, you want to go down to interface. And now here think of it from like a port a ports aspect like where data flows almost like pipes that you are pointing uh the water and you're changing the flows via different valves and gates right so the idea with this is your USB function you have a comm your USB audio in and out you can set this to AF or external data so that would be like uh external data in no that's not what I wanted back in I keep you got to hit back, not escape. Uh, but for PC output, right, for GPS and APRS data, you can tell it where you want the data to go. Do you want it coming off the main unit? Whoa, come on now. Do you want it coming off of the main unit, which is the body, or do you want it coming off the panel, which is the screen, or do you want that going via Bluetooth? You can set that. So, just keep in mind when you set it to main unit, like that means you're plugging in here, right, for GPS. If it is output for APRS, you're going to do that over the main unit as well on USB or you can change it to Bluetooth. I did it again. Uh for KISS, for instance, right now I have that pointed at the Android application for the Kiss TNC. So I have that set to Bluetooth and that's fine. You can continue to do that. So you can use a tablet to point the information the blue the kiss information over Bluetooth while you still do GPS via the B uh via your USBC. So then you can go through the whole thing your DV digital voice data gateway is also can be over the panel or Bluetooth. So you can kind of point things in whichever way you want them to go. But then when you bring it back into say Kiss. So let's let's go out of here. We'll change this out to KISS. and then we'll bring up the Android app. So, let's go to APRS. We'll go to the preferences on APRS Droid and under connection preferences, we have it set to kiss TNC. It needs to be in that format. And then we have it pointed at this Bluetooth device which is the TMD75 which you can see there. And so that's why it's routing the data from the radio to the application. And then we should have Oh, no. We wanted to have that working. There we go. Now it's starting to work. New messages. So, let's say uh relay Oh, that's interesting. Cyber radio, thanks for the uh the tip there. Said just a heads up, if you are programming, use the body. Don't use the panel. It is much much slower in experience. Oh, that's good to know. Thank you. So interesting. You got to love uh the the relay system. So, okay. Sorry, my bad. Uh let's send R. Just send me the message. Clear it all out. Now they're all coming in. So, we're picking up messages pretty much live um over APRS because I have beaconed. So, you should be able to see them like so. I will answer that here in a minute. Hold on. Hold on with that question. Okay, we'll just leave it like that for now. Let me get a sip of water. I didn't even crack a beer or anything because it's just too dang hot. I will though, I think, for the after chat, but I don't know how long I can hang out, man. It is too hot. My my wife and kids, the reason why my son bursted in is because he left a bunch of stuff in here. Um, they're going swimming right now. They call You can see it. I'm I'm glistening. I'm glistening because it's so hot. Okay. Um, we'll just let that go in the background. Is that the messages that have come in? Yeah. Interesting that I'm I'm curious. See if you can send to all. Um, anybody who's watching right now, see if you can send to all and I want to see if it it'll make it to me. I have a feeling it won't. If you got that message, see if you can reply to me. I'm glowing, everyone. I'm glowing. Um, actually, yes, Joseph. Um, the D75 and the D750 are very similar. They have a very, very similar memory or uh menu system. So yeah, you you should be able to follow a lot of what I did on the previous video about the 750, but also if you go back and watch my videos on the 75, I I did very similar videos on that too when it came out. So you should be able to uh to cover that as well for sure. Okay, let's see. What was the other thing I wanted to talk about? Oh, okay. Yeah. So, my thoughts on these two radios, um, if you absolutely have to do 220, then obviously the Kenwood is pretty much the only game in town. Like, it is kind of the premier radio for 220 right now. Particularly, obviously, if you're in the United States, it's going to be the way to go. Um, Icon has promised a firmware that will do APRS on the touchcreen. The touchcreen has a full querty c uh keyboard. So, from an APRS message input standpoint, it's going to be easier than the nine key of the Kenwood. If you like APRS and we assume that the firmware is going to work to some level of expectation, the Icon might be the better radio for that for that input simply because it has the um actually the quiry keyboard, right? But um I haven't really put them side by side. So the audio quality I don't have a comparison. Obviously, we had the issue with the clicking on the Kenwood mic. Good news. I will be dropping a video next week on that, and I kind of already mentioned at the start of this video that we we have a solution for that. So, it's it's going to be fine. It's it's actually it's very easy to resolve. In fact, it kind of kills two birds with one stone. Uh allowing you to put a right angle connection on the head unit for when you mount it like right on, you know, when you when you mount it in your vehicle, you're going to have it at a little bit of an angle. and having that cable come off the side kind of needs to be 90 degrees. 90 degrees folds back in real nice so it can kind of hide away. Uh that would that's that would be the better option. And so spoiler, I'll just give you the spoiler. It's pretty easy. You just use the panel cable as the mic extension cable and then you just use regular Cat 5 cable for the panel. That's it. the the panel cable that comes with the radio is um the same as the extension cable. It just is male to-male. So, you will need a little in fact you need one of those those little barrel connectors that's sticking out right there. That barrel connector is literally there for this. They're for this purpose. But no response yet. So, I have a feeling that all did not it only works for the transmitting broadcast side of it. Interesting. Very interesting indeed. So, uh, we can go a little bit longer or we can wrap things up and go straight into the after chat. Today, I've got that 5200 that's sitting right next to this off camera right now. We should maybe just think about doing a comparison of some kind. We'll get in the chat. We'll let you guys ask questions. We'll hang out, have a little fun, drink a couple of beers of Brew Dogs, and uh, take your questions live. Yeah, sound like fun. Maybe we'll just do that. So, as always, the Discord is linked in the video description. It's a fantastic community for answering ham radio questions. We go straight to newcomers first. The link is in the video description. Join and then give it a couple minutes to get you all sorted out, but you want to go to live-stream and then live stream. Join that one. That's where we'll be doing the live Q&A. We take newcomers questions first, but I am thinking we'll just put these two radios right next to each other and just have a little a little go at it. I think um it'll take me a couple minutes to get some materials and hardware because I think we're going to want um we're going to want some audio do an audio comparison audio check. Yeah. Give me uh give me a hot hot 10 hot 15 and we'll we'll get turned around on that. Sound good? I'll wrap things up here. First though, let me say a big thank you to all my patrons. And uh and Chris, appreciate you, buddy. Need more beer. Beer money as always. Of course. And yes, this was a patron picks episode. If if you didn't love this topic, well, help me out. Help out the channel. Come join us on Patreon. Uh every month I let the producer level patrons vote on the topic of the month. This was the topic they voted on. I think I have I I think we covered the 70. I I think I think we did a good job on the 750. I did not expect this to come up so quickly, but maybe people are on the fence and they didn't know they didn't know what to do. They didn't know what to do hot live, you know, will it do all the things that they're looking for. So, people have questions. They like to see the advanced features and some of the stuff that like goes above and beyond what you would expect, right? Like like crossband repeat. That's a fun feature.
